The Xerox WorkCentre 6605 is the base model in an impressive series of multifunction laser printers, but it tested slower than the advertised maximum speeds of 36 pages per minute for monochrome and color documents. With the 6605N and 6605DN models, users have the option to spend a little more for expanded features like network connectivity and automatic duplexing for double-sided printing. Despite its lackluster speeds, the 6605 benefits from a decent package of print, fax, scan and copy features, long-lasting WorkCentre 6605 printer toner and upgradable media handling.

Measuring in at 20x16x20 inches, the device isn't quite compact enough to share a desktop with a user's computer. However, the unit's large build includes a front panel with sufficient control features such as a 4.3-inch touch screen LCD for access to copy and scan functions, LEDs for alerting users of low Xerox 6605 toner levels and other errors, and a number pad for quick fax dialing. Users also have access to the secure print and secure fax features for encrypting sensitive documents. The front USB port enables printing from or scanning to a thumb drive.

One of the 6605's highlights is its flexible media handling, which can be increased from its standard capacity of 700 pages to a maximum of 1,250 pages with the purchase of a second input tray. The device also provides a 50-sheet automatic document feeder for quickly scanning, copying or faxing large jobs.

The unit tested well against expert output tests, printing above-par graphics and photos with a maximum resolution of 1200x1200 dpi using color WorkCentre 6605 toner. Text documents printed satisfactorily enough to suit standard office projects, but documents with smaller fonts have a disappointing output.

The device uses magenta, yellow, cyan and black Xerox 6605 toner cartridges that have standard yields of 2,000 pages for the color toners and 3,000 pages for the black supply. Users have the option to purchase high-capacity replacements that can last up to 6,000 pages for each color supply and 8,000 pages for the black Xerox 6605 toner cartridge.

The 6605 offers a nice combination of quality output performance and a versatile bundle of multifunction features. While they print slower than the top models in their class, this series of color laser printers are a good solution for small offices.
