Xerox 6400 Printer Review

The Xerox WorkCentre 6400 multifunction laser printer includes faxing, copying, printing, and scanning functions, in a compact footprint that won't eat up a lot of office space. Its touchscreen control panel makes for easy operation, and its maximum speed of 37 pages per minute in black and 32 pages per minute in color is impressive. Its major drawback is expensive supplies, however, as Xerox 6400 printer toner costs are on the high end of its class.

The design of the 6400 features a desktop-friendly frame in its basic configuration. It has a footprint of just 20.9x23.1 inches, and a height of 24.7 inches, but it weighs 130 pounds (including the WorkCentre 6400 toner supplies) so it could be difficult to set up without a little assistance.

With a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose tray to start, it is a solid small or medium office device. With the expandability to accommodate up to two additional 500-sheet trays, however, it can also easily handle larger office environments, with a maximum input capacity of 1,600 sheets.

The most productive portion of the 6400 might be its large, 50-sheet automatic document feeder, which makes for rapid scanning, and supports duplexing for two-sided documents. Duplex printing is supported as well, and at paper sizes up to 8.5x14 inches for both input and output.

Replacement toners are the real trouble spot, unfortunately. With four colors of Xerox 6400 toner cartridges to replace, the somewhat high price tag of supplies can really add up. High-capacity versions of WorkCentre 6400 toner cartridges are available, upgrading from an 8,000-page capacity to 14,000 pages, but the cost per page for Xerox 6400 toner is still quite high compared to competing models.

While the networking and multifunction features of the Xerox 6400 go beyond what one would expect from such a compact machine, it is ultimately difficult to recommend due to its costly supplies. With more cost-effective models available in its class, it is recommended that buyers seek lower operating costs.
