While inkjet printers tend to dominate the graphic arts world, the Xerox Phaser 7800 aims to change that as a high-resolution color laser printer with excellent output quality. It can print on media sizes up to tabloid, at speeds of up to 45 pages per minute, but prices for Xerox 7800 printer toner aren't as low as buyers might expect.

Buyers can choose from the 7800DN model with duplexing and networking, the 7800GX model with upgraded paper capacity, and the 7800DX model that includes even more paper capacity. All three sport the same fast print speeds, the same first page out time of around 9 seconds, and use the same Phaser 7800 toner.

As an upgrade from lower models, the 7800 series includes a 4.3-inch touchscreen interface with big icons that make navigating its features quick and simple. It even shows videos and troubleshooting information when users need help. Duplexing is included with each model for quick two-sided printing, which can save paper, and the toner save model can limit the amount of Xerox 7800 toner needed for each page, with only a slight reduction in print quality.

The biggest draw for the 7800 is its print quality. Xerox promises "print shop quality", and the model mostly delivers. With a maximum resolution of 1200x2400 dpi, it is near the top of the list for laser models in quality.

Of course, many users still want their replacement toners to be affordable, and this is where the 7800 falls a bit flat. Prices for Xerox 7800 toner cartridges are some of the more expensive in its class. Even with fairly large capacities, Phaser 7800 toner cartridges don't provide a very cost-effective solution, and those who do a lot of printing will find it expensive to operate.

The multiple models of the 7800 give users plenty of options, and its speed and quality are impressive from day one. Its steep price and high running costs will limit its appeal for those who don't absolutely need its high-quality printing, however.
