The compact design and affordable purchase price of the Savin CLP31DN color laser printer will be the main draws for most buyers. Digging a little deeper, however, reveals fast print speeds of up to 31 pages per minute, high-quality printing at 1200 dpi resolution, and included features like duplexing and ethernet networking. The main drawback is that Savin CLP31DN printer toner tends to be expensive.

The CLP31DN is designed for a small shared office with its networking support and 40 GB hard drive for storage, but it is almost as small as some personal devices. It measures just 17.6x23.2x19.2 inches, with a weight of 110 pounds. It can warm up in less than 30 seconds, to get going quickly when powered up, and it has a first page out time of 15 seconds for color and 10 seconds for monochrome, eliminating the waiting when a job starts.

When an office starts to grow, the CLP31DN can do so as well. Its paper capacity can be upgraded to a maximum of 1,750 sheets, up from the standard 650 sheets, to handle a higher volume. Memory can be expanded from the initial 256 MB to a maximum of 512 MB, and users can even add multifunction capabilities with a scanner unit upgrade.

While purchasing the CLP31DN for small offices and then expanding it seems like a good idea, the main obstacle will be replacement toners. Savin CLP31DN toner cartridges have a fairly high price tag, and replacing all four on a regular basis can add up. With a capacity of 15,000 pages each, Savin CLP31DN toner cartridges won't need replacing often at smaller volumes, but as usage grows, so will the running costs.

With fast print speeds, solid output quality, and a low price, the CLP31DN is a good choice for a small office. Those who plan to print at higher volumes will want to consider the high cost of Savin CLP31DN toner, however.
