The Ricoh Aficio SP 1000 series of multifunction monochrome laser printers includes the SP 1000S model with scanning, printing, and copying features, as well as the SP 1000SF that also adds faxing capabilities. Its small office form factor offers a compact footprint, but it still achieves a maximum speed of 16 pages per minute, while utilizing affordable Ricoh SP 1000 printer toner for cost-effective operation.

The design of the SP 1000 may be geared toward the small office, but its feature set it quite robust. It measures 18.08x17.6x15.2 inches, with a weight of 29 pounds that makes it easy to move around or set up initially. Still, it has features like a 50-sheet automatic document feeder usually seen in larger, more expensive devices.

One of the potential drawbacks of the SP 1000 is its lack of networking support, offering only a single USB port for connection to a PC. Given its limited paper capacity of 250 sheets, and a single bypass tray, it would hardly be suited for more than a very small office anyway, but network sharing would have been a nice bonus. Individual users will like the machine's quick warm-up time of around 21 seconds, and the first copy speed of around 13 seconds from the platen and 15 seconds from the ADF.

The unit includes a starter Ricoh SP 1000 toner cartridge in the box, but it comes in the standard capacity, instead of a smaller supply. Standard toners have a capacity of 4,000 pages, and combined with a fairly low price for Aficio SP 1000 toner cartridges, users will get a very low cost per page. Aficio SP 1000 toner isn't the most affordable in its class, but it won't break the budget.

With some of the features of a larger, high-volume device, the SP 1000 includes none of the bulk. The result is a very nicely-equipped small office printer for personal users, at a great price. With the added benefit of low-cost Ricoh SP 1000 toner, it is a very affordable option for personal use.
