Lexmark Z735 Printer Review

A machine like the Lexmark Z735 is clearly designed to be used in a home that only has occasional printing needs. With its stylish, compact frame and light weight of just over 5 pounds, this unit will not take up much space but should match most home decors. The Z735 has been Energy Star certified for low power usage, supports only Windows operating systems, and can connect to a single PC via a built-in USB port.

This unit's footprint is approximately 15x9 inches, which will take up less space than most laptops and almost all desktop computers. The Z735 includes automatic red-eye removal software, and the thermal inkjet technology creates photographs that are comparable to photos developed in labs. The way this technology works is that nozzles on the printhead eject tiny dots of Lexmark Z735 ink onto the page. This creates a resolution of up to 4800x1200 dpi in color.

Unlike most current color printers, this unit holds a single Lexmark Z735 ink cartridge, which contains only cyan, magenta, and yellow printer ink. Unfortunately, the text that is produced by this printer is below average and often illegible for small fonts. The lack of black Lexmark Z735 printer ink means the three other colors are blended to create black, resulting in sub-par quality for black-and-white documents.

Speed is another important characteristic in a printer, and the Z735 falls right around the average level. The maximum print speed is 15 pages per minute for black-and-white and color prints. The paper sits on a standard input tray that can hold up to 100 sheets of paper and the finished document is caught by a 25-page output tray. Alternative media is supported, though there is not a specialized tray for it, requiring users to unload the main tray.

Though the text does leave something to be desired and the color images only truly shine on specialized paper, the compact frame and decent speed still make this inkjet printer a good choice for a home. The single Lexmark Z735 ink cartridge can only yield 150 pages, though, so it is not a recommended device for consumers who do a lot of printing.
