With its relatively compact footprint and versatility, this unit is ideal for busy offices with limited space. The X546 will be compatible with most popular operating systems, and users have the option of connecting via USB or sharing via ethernet. Wireless connectivity can also be added if preferred.

When printing or making copies, up to 25 pages per minute can be produced, but only 20 pages can be scanned per minute. In duplex mode, which is two-sided printing, up to 12 sides per minute can be generated. The first page will begin printing in about 13 seconds. The fax function is efficient as well, boasting a 33.6 Kbps transmission rate which will process faxes in mere seconds. Of course, the rate of production will slow in order to reach the maximum resolution, which is 1200x1200 dpi.

Cyan, magenta, yellow, and black Lexmark X546 toner cartridges are required for operation and the starter toners that are provided will yield up to 1,000 pages each. Once those are empty, replacement Lexmark X546 toner can be purchased from a variety of vendors and there is an option for getting the higher-yielding versions that can produce up to 2,000 pages per color and 2,500 for black. Remanufactured Lexmark X546 toner cartridges are available from alternative suppliers, and will cost about half the price of the OEM printer toner supplies.

The maximum monthly print cycle for this color laser device is 55,000 pages, though it is recommended not to exceed 4,000 pages. There is a powerful 500 MHz processor driving the X546, as well as some upgradeable features. The memory can be expanded from 256 MB up to 600 MB. The paper capacity, which is 900 sheets to begin with, can be increased to 1,450 sheets by adding another 500-sheet drawer.

This machine is quiet in operation and weighs less than 70 pounds, so it is not impossible to move. The display panel allows users to check levels of Lexmark X546 toner, change settings and functions, and adjust copy sizes.
