The Lexmark X4270 has an inexpensive price tag and design that includes a modest range of features and the ability to print, scan, copy and fax documents. One con, however, is its slow speeds of only 19 pages per minute for monochrome documents and 10 pages per minute for color. Despite slow speeds and other lackluster elements, this inkjet printer also offers many benefits like user-friendly features and versatile all-in-one capabilities that will suit small offices.

The unit is relatively compact for its feature set, measuring in at just 20x11x7 inches and weighing less than 10 pounds. Built-in features such as its control panel are simplistic, incorporating a basic LCD that reviewers say can be hard to read at times, but it includes useful buttons that are dedicated to each function and a number pad for fax dialing.

For quick multiple-page scanning, the X4270 comes with a 30-sheet automatic document feeder. The unit's media handling is rather limited considering its designation as a small office printer, providing only a single 100-sheet input tray that can accept a maximum paper size of 8.5x17 inches. Considering this media capacity and its estimated maximum monthly duty cycle of 5,000 pages, this device is best suited for offices with light-duty printing needs.

According to expert reviews, the unit did not perform well against output tests, with text that lacked detail and hampered readability. Graphics printed slightly better with a resolution of 4800x1200 dpi using color Lexmark X4270 printer ink, but with slight color dithering.

Despite having high costs, Lexmark X4270 ink cartridges have low yields, with color supplies lasting only 275 pages and the black replacement printing 225 pages. However, users have the option to purchase a high-capacity black supply that yields up to 600 pages, as well as replace expired printer ink with less expensive remanufactured Lexmark X4270 ink cartridges.

Despite its low price tag and simple range of control features, the X4270 is somewhat disappointing due to its slow speeds and poor output quality. Small offices that don't mind spending a little more for their all-in-one inkjet printer will find better models on the market.
