With the capacity to produce up to 50,000 pages every month, the Lexmark X264 is an excellent all-in-one office printer. Printing, scanning, copying and faxing functions are all included, saving space and time by eliminating multiple machines. The output rate of 30 pages per minute is efficient enough for most offices, but does fall a little short compared to other printers in the same class. The warm-up time is short and the first page should print out in less than 8 seconds.

The Lexmark X264 is sold in a fully-loaded version, the X264DN, which features networking and duplexing. The networking is made possible by the addition of an ethernet port to accompany the standard USB 2.0 port. For any office hoping to have multiple people share the unit, networking is absolutely essential. The duplexer allows for automatic two-sided printing, which can conserve paper usage and still delivers about 15 documents per minute.

As it is a monochrome device, only black Lexmark X264 toner is required. This will help to keep ongoing costs relatively low. Another cost-saving feature is the high-capacity Lexmark X264 toner cartridge that is available. This printer toner yields 9,000 pages to the 3,500 pages of standard toners or the 1,500 pages that the starter Lexmark X264 toner cartridge can produce. The higher yield reduces the cost per page significantly.

The standard input tray holds 250 sheets and the output tray holds about 150 sheets. Additional trays are also available to increase the paper capacity to a maximum of 800 sheets. Other paper handling options include a 50-sheet automatic document feeder and a single-sheet bypass tray for various media types like envelopes and labels.

Its built-in features make the X264 an ideal device for busy offices. The 266 MHz processor and 64 MB aide in the output rate of each function and the walk-up copying and scanning capabilities provide additional convenience. The 2-line LCD is backlit and will show all error messages and display a warning when Lexmark X264 printer toner runs low. A maximum resolution of 1200x1200 dpi provides professional-quality output.

Though it does lack the color capabilities that many current laser printers on the market offer, the speed and functionality of the X264 should make it appealing to many workgroups.
