HP PSC 500 Printer Review

Both the HP PSC 500 and PSC 500xi are models in a series of multifunction units that can handle the light-duty print, scan and copy needs of home offices. The PSC 500 may have a low price tag, but it suffers from a number of setbacks such as some of the slowest output speeds in its class, printing at a maximum of only 9 pages per minute for monochrome documents and 7 for color projects. Although it is certainly an entry-level inkjet printer, its affordability, easy-to-use features and an all-in-one design make it a good bargain.

With limitations like a maximum monthly duty cycle of 2,000 pages and a standard memory of 8 MB, the PSC 500 is best suited to handle low volumes. The device's media handling is also minimal, offering a maximum capacity of only 100 pages through its single input tray. Another disappointing setback is its lack of an automatic document feeder, which is a standard fixture in most multifunction office units that can provide continuous scanning.

The unit's size of 18x17x12 inches is compact enough for desktop use. This small build incorporates a very basic front panel with a monochrome LCD to display job progress updates, a button to turn the machine on and off and LEDs to alert users when paper or HP PSC 500 printer ink is running low. The unit is compatible with Windows operating systems, and the Photo Projects software can help users easily make creative projects with their photos. Lacking a built-in USB port and compatibility with Mac operating systems, the HP PSC 500 and its single parallel connection is one of the more simplistic models in its class.

The unit uses one tricolor supply and one black HP PSC 500 printer ink cartridge that can print color and monochrome projects with satisfactory detail and a resolution of 600x600 dpi. Since each tricolor supply can yield around 620 pages and the black HP PSC 500 ink cartridge can last approximately 500 pages, this device is capable of supporting minimal daily printing.

The HP PSC 500 is too primitive of a printer to support small office environments due to its limited connectivity, media handling and slow speeds. However, for a low starting price this inkjet device can provide basic print, scan and copy functions to home offices with light-duty needs.
