HP 130 Printer Review

Known for its portability and high-quality photo printing, the HP PhotoSmart 130 is a camera-happy user's dream. It lacks the capacity to serve in a work environment and is not versatile enough to appeal to serious photographers, but it can be carried from place to place and will deliver lab-quality pictures that are 4x6 inches or smaller. The 130 weighs only about 3 pounds and has a frame that is 4.7 inches tall and about 9 inches wide.

The speed of operation for this color inkjet printer is completely contingent on the complexity of the image and the print mode used. For instance, an image printed in draft mode will print in less than 2 minutes but have a slightly lower resolution than an image printed in photo mode, which can take up to 5 minutes.

The overall quality of each photo is another thing that can vary, depending on the method of connection. If printing a picture through the USB port using a computer, the maximum resolution that can be reached is 4800x1200 dpi. However, when using one of the four memory card slots to print without a computer, 1200x1200 dpi is the best possible resolution. This gives users a choice to make between convenience and quality.

Even though this inkjet model uses cyan, magenta, and yellow printer ink, there is only one HP 130 ink cartridge. It has three compartments that each contain a separate color of PhotoSmart 130 ink. Though this makes the task of purchasing replacements easier, it can also be a bit wasteful as the entire consumable must be replaced when only a single color of HP 130 ink has run out.

A number of online companies offer competitive prices for replacement PhotoSmart 130 ink cartridges, and some even offer compatible versions that are even more affordable. Printing photos consumes quite a bit of printer ink, but the 400-page yield of the HP 130 ink will keep the cost per page relatively affordable for an inkjet printer.

Overall, the 130 is a rock solid option for photo-enthusiasts and amateurs. Professional photographers may be inclined to spend more upfront for faster production, but this unit is a good choice for the average home user.
