Using drop-on-demand inkjet technology, the all-in-one HP OfficeJet T45 is the perfect device for a home office. Built to generate up to 3,000 prints every month, this unit is a scanner, printer, copier, and fax machine all wrapped up into a single 24-pound device with a compact size of only 9x19x14 inches. Users have the option of using the T45 through a computer via parallel port or as a stand-alone copier, scanner, and fax machine.

The curved paper path can handle a variety of media types. The input tray will hold up to 100 sheets of standard paper, 30 cards, 25 transparencies, and 15 envelopes. The output tray holds only half the maximum input. The single-pass scanner offers a 24-bit color depth and 8-bit grayscale, equating to a maximum internal resolution of 300x300 dpi. Using the color HP T45 ink, however, the maximum resolution is 600x600 dpi when printing or copying documents, but this drops to 600x300 dpi with only black printer ink.

Speed is not overly impressive with this unit, but it is sufficient for users working from home. Faxes will be transmitted in as little as 6 seconds, and up to 6 duplicates can be made per minute. Black-and-white documents print at 11 pages per minute, while color pages can be printed at a maximum rate of 8.5 pages per minute. This top speed can only be reached in Draft mode, however. The print setting will have to be set to Best to reach the highest quality, which ejects more dots of HP T45 ink per inch.

Two OfficeJet T45 ink cartridges are used in this machine: one that holds cyan, magenta, and yellow printer ink, and the other that holds only black. The black HP T45 ink cartridge yields up to 830 pages while the tricolor supply will yield 620 pages. Unfortunately, OEM replacements are a bit on the pricey side, so users that print frequently will find operational costs high. To reduce costs, third-party vendors offer remanufactured versions of the OfficeJet T45 ink, which costs about a third of the OEM price.
