The HP OfficeJet 5500 is a multifunction inkjet machine that offers color printing, color copying, color scanning, and even color faxing capabilities. The device isn't the quickest amongst competitors, printing only a maximum of 15 pages per minute. In light of its slower speeds, small-capacity OfficeJet 5500 printer ink and limited range of features, this affordable unit is best equipped to support small offices with fairly low volumes.

The unit's flatbed scanner is slim enough that it won't contribute much bulk to the machine's compact size, and also incorporates a 20-sheet automatic document feeder to support multipage projects. The device as a whole only has a total media capacity of 100 sheets, which combined with its maximum monthly duty cycle and memory of only 16 MB further pegs it for light-duty use.

Options for connectivity are limited to only a standard USB port on the rear panel for direct PC compatibility. The front panel also incorporates a number pad for fax dialing, LEDs for low HP 5500 printer ink and low paper alerts, and a monochrome screen. Providing technology like PhotoREt for color management, the unit can print sharp graphics and photos with an optimized resolution of 4800x1200 dpi using OfficeJet 5500 ink.

The device uses one black and one combined tricolor HP 5500 ink cartridge that can contribute to a moderately high cost per page. The color supply can yield only around 400 pages each, while the black HP 5500 ink cartridge has a maximum capacity of 520 pages. Such yields are ideal for only low volumes, or this device will end up costing more than it's worth in replacement supplies.

This small office inkjet printer has a disappointing set of features that will limit the volume capacity of users and raise the cost of use. While it puts up a decent performance with a consistent output, elements like slow speeds and minimal connectivity make it a poor contender among its competition.
