Although the HP LaserJet CM4540 multifunction color laser printer has the capability to be an enterprise-level device, it can also be scaled down to fit in a busy small office with a large workload, or anything in between. It has impressive print speeds of up to 42 pages per minute, in both color and monochrome, but while the cost per page is low, HP CM4540 printer toner is expensive to replace.

Not only can the unit handle printing, scanning, copying, and digital sending functions, but it can operate on multiple tasks at once without noticeable slowdowns. This is thanks, in part, to its large memory of 1.28 GB. The standard input paper capacity starts out at 600 sheets, but can be maxed out at 2,100 sheets by adding extra trays. The CM4540f and CM4540fskm models are even pre-configured with additional paper capacity and finishing options.

While the CM4540 is ready for a busy work environment, it also inherits some useful features that are generally consumer-oriented. The ePrint support, for example, makes it easy to print from mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, and users can browse different templates and helpful documents right from the full-color control panel.

Replacing four separate toners can get expensive. The color LaserJet CM4540 toner cartridges have large capacities of 12,500 pages each, while the black HP CM4540 toner cartridge has a capacity of 17,000 pages, so the cost per page is low. Replacing all of the LaserJet CM4540 toner at once, however, will make a big dent in the office budget.

With great features like HP's ePrint, fast printing speeds, and high-quality output, the CM4540 is an impressive enterprise-level machine. Unfortunately, HP CM4540 toner comes at an enterprise-level price, so only offices with a large budget will be able to afford its operating costs.
