HP 5MP Printer Review

Building on the reputation of the 5P model, the HP LaserJet 5MP laser printer is a Macintosh-compatible version. It has similar features and speeds but adds the ability to interface with Macintosh computers as well as Windows machines. While it may be outstripped by faster and more feature-rich printers, it can't be beat for economical costing HP toner cartridges and reliability. HP 5MP toner prices are very low.

With its 12,000 page monthly duty cycle, it is clear the HP 5MP means business. It can handle a fairly large number of users in a networked environment without breaking a sweat. Although the machine doesn't come with ethernet networking as a standard feature, it can be added with an HP JetDirect upgrade and is highly recommended.

Paper handling is one of the unit's best features. It can handle a wide variety of media sizes up to a maximum of 8.5x14 inches, and can handle a variety of media types including transparencies, envelopes, labels and more. Input paper capacity is 350 sheets, divided between a 250 sheet main drawer and a 100-sheet multipurpose drawer. The multipurpose tray can also be used for envelopes and other media without the need to empty the main drawer.

Print speeds are slow, at only 6 pages per minute. The included memory of 3 MB may be limiting for users who routinely print graphic-heavy documents but can be expanded to a maximum of 50 MB.

When comparing ongoing costs, printer toner is always a major factor. Fortunately, the toner costs significantly less than HP ink cartridges when calculating cost per page. LaserJet 5MP toner cartridges are some of the most inexpensive in their class. HP 5MP toner cartridges have a large page yield of 4,000 pages. The wide availability of replacement toners is very convenient, and using third-party compatible LaserJet 5MP toner instead of the more expensive OEM HP 5MP toner will save users a lot of money.
