The HP LaserJet 5550 may not be the most affordable color laser printer in its class, but for the busy office that needs excellent quality in a model that also supports wide-format printing, it is a great choice. Its single-pass printing engine provides consistent speed, and the low cost of HP 5550 toner may make up for its higher upfront cost in the long run.

The 5550 is available in multiple configurations. The 5550N model includes ethernet networking support, the 5550DN adds automatic duplexing for fast two-sided printing, the 5550DTN adds extra paper capacity, and the 5550HDN has additional paper handling features. Setting the printer up for network sharing is a quick and easy process. Once set up, the HP Web Jetadmin server built into the machine allows administrators and users to maintain and monitor it remotely. Features can even be restricted for certain users, and the unit can provide detailed usage reports to help an office cut down on HP toner usage.

Print speed is around 27 pages per minute and is the same for both monochrome and color printing due to the excellent single-pass engine. First page out time is around 16 seconds, meaning no long waits for print jobs to start.

Frequently replacing toners is a thing of the past, as LaserJet 5550 toner cartridges have very large capacities. Environmental sensors allow the unit to modify the charge of HP 5550 toner to compensate for environmental conditions, resulting in better prints.
