HP 1220 Printer Review

The HP Deskjet 1220 (also known as the 1220c, 1220c/ps, 1220cse, and 1220cxi in various countries) is designed to be a personal inkjet printer with printing ability that ranges from 4x6" photographs to 13x50" banners. It is considered a large-format machine, though photo printing is its specialty. Though it lacks all-in-one capabilities, it is fairly fast. As many as 11 pages can be printed per minute in black-and-white and about 9 pages per minute in full color.

Unfortunately, printing standard text documents is not the strong point of the 1220, as it maxes out at 600x600 dpi, so offices may want to look elsewhere. Photos and graphics printed on photo paper, however, can reach a maximum resolution of 2400x1200 dpi, which is excellent quality for a personal inkjet printer. The high printing resolution and long-lasting HP 1220 ink makes for bright, vivid, and true-to-life photos.

Four colors of printer ink are used (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black), but only two HP 1220 ink cartridges are needed, as one is a combined tricolor supply. Replacements can be found from a variety of vendors online, and some third-party suppliers offer compatible Deskjet 1220 ink cartridges that will cost less than half as much as the OEM versions, but still provide the same performance. The black HP 1220 ink can last for about 830 pages before expiring while the color printer ink can only generate about 450 pages.

This unit supports both Mac and Windows operating systems and offers easy connection via parallel or USB port. Networking support is not available, so it is intended for personal use. Approximately 150 sheets can be held in the input tray and this includes photo paper, transparencies, greeting cards, and envelopes among others.

Overall, the 1220 can produce high-grade images and graphics with decent speeds and a relatively low cost per page, especially when using compatible Deskjet 1220 ink. It supports versatile media types and will be a solid personal printer, as long as buyers don't mind its lackluster text output.
