Believe it or not, the all-in-one office printer has only been around since 1994 when Hewlett Packard introduced its HP OfficeJet personal printer-fax-copy machine to the world. Prior to that, only HP laser printers that use HP toner cartridges existed. This was the very first mass-market all-in-one device of its kind that was specifically developed for both professional business office and personal home office use. The printer was a plain paper, drop-on-demand thermal inkjet with a 600 x 300 dpi print resolution. It could print up to 3 pages per minute in fast mode and was compatible with Windows and DOS applications. The feeder copier could manage one copy per minute and the fax machine could produce images at 100 x 200 dpi. The HP OfficeJet ink printer was a black ink only printer and it wasn't capable of scanning. Needless to say, it wasn't a fast machine, but at the time it got the job done and was an amazing advancement in space saving technology.

Today, of course, HP has greatly advanced the all-in-one printer technology they originally introduced to the consumer. Their high-end OfficeJet Pro series is wireless, full color, and can print, copy, scan, and fax with Windows, Mac, or Linux. It has printing and copying speeds of up to 35 pages per minute and has a 4800 x 1200 dpi print resolution for high quality photo results. It has a standard flatbed scanner and a 50-sheet automatic document feeder for easy two-sided printing. As with most all-in-one printers today, it is full color and uses four individual HP inkjet cartridges that can produce up to 1400 pages per printer ink tank.

While the original all-in-one printers were mainly geared towards business users, most people today want one for both business and personal photo printing. HP PhotoSmart printers are specifically designed to produce lab-quality photographs while also being able to print, scan, copy, and fax at the touch of a button. Specially designed PhotoSmart ink cartridges will produce amazing color photographs and rich black-and-white images with up to 9600 x 2400 dpi resolutions, which is a much higher resolution than what a toner cartridge based printer can produce. For the professional graphic designer or photographer, HP also offers a line of high quality, large-format commercial color printers. The HP DesignJet printer and DesignJet ink cartridges are specially made to print pages up to 44" wide for posters, banners, and signs. There are six different HP ink cartridges for the DesignJet printer, including the optional photo black HP ink cartridge which will create more detailed photos and graphics that resist fading.

Always looking towards the future, HP is also concerned about the environment, so that's why they have designed the Deskjet ink printer with all-in-one printing, scanning, and copying capabilities. This compact, yet powerful little machine is made from 50% recycled plastic and each black HP inkjet ink cartridge contains at least 50% recycled plastic. It's also energy efficient and has the HP Smart Web Printing technology that allows you to select, collect, store, combine, and print content from multiple websites onto one page in order to save paper.
