The HP Deskjet F4180 can operate as an inkjet printer, scanner, and copier, and its low purchase price makes it a good value, especially with its maximum speeds of up to 20 pages per minute in black and 14 pages per minute in color. OEM prices for HP F4180 printer ink can be high, though, so users will want to seek alternatives.

The design of the F4180 is reasonably compact for an all-in-one inkjet. It measures 7.11x16.76x10.53 inches, and weighs only 9.39 pounds without the Deskjet F4180 ink cartridges installed. The input paper tray is a little small, at only 100 sheets, but should suffice for the average home user.

Instead of a color screen on the control panel, users get a series of buttons and indicator lights, which can make the unit a bit difficult to use. Most users will get used to it, but models with a touchscreen display are only a bit more expensive, so some buyers might want to consider the upgrade. Still the indicator lights do a decent job of helping users monitor the machine's status, as well as letting them know when the Deskjet F4180 printer ink supply is running low.

The system uses one black and one combined tricolor HP F4180 ink cartridge for printing, which is easy to replace but can also mean extra waste. OEM HP F4180 ink tends to be expensive, so users may want to consider using remanufactured supplies instead, to help reduce operating costs.

Compared to newer models with large touchscreen displays and features like wireless sharing, the HP F4180 is a little less impressive. It does offer a good balance of price and performance, however, and its output quality is quite good. Buyers looking for a bargain might still find it appealing, but others should probably consider an upgraded model.
