As part of the professional series, the HP Deskjet 990c marries high-quality color printing with a compact design and affordable price tag. Print speeds aren't the fastest in its class, at a maximum of 17 pages per minute in black and 13 pages per minute in color, but advanced features like automatic duplexing and auto paper sensing can save time and money.

The 990c model also goes by the names 990cm, 990Cse, and 990cxi, which are available in other countries. Each uses the same HP 990c printer ink, however, which helps keep costs lower. The dimensions are 7.72x17.32x17.13 inches, and it weighs 14.65 pounds without the Deskjet 990c printer ink installed, so it is light enough to move around without much trouble.

The device can connect via USB or parallel port, and both Windows and Mac platforms are supported when using USB. Though it could be used on a network with an HP JetDirect adapter, the 150-sheet paper tray could be a limiting factor for anything more than light-duty use, and the monthly duty cycle maxes out at 5,000 pages. Black output can be printed at up to 600 dpi resolution, which should be adequate for sharp text, and color output can reach an enhanced resolution of up to 2400x1200 dpi when using photo inkjet paper.

One of the less professional aspects of the device is its use of a tricolor HP 990c ink cartridge instead of discrete colors, which could result in more waste. This does make the Deskjet 990c ink cartridges easier to replace, however. Capacities are a little larger than the average inkjet model, with up to 830 pages for black HP 990c ink supply, and around 450 pages for the tricolor supply.

For a compact home office printer, the HP 990c is quite impressive. Its photo quality and sharp text will be more than adequate for general use, and could even make a good impression on clients. Its affordable retail price and compact frame are also particularly appealing for small budgets and tiny spaces.
