The HP Deskjet 845 is about as basic as photo inkjet printers get, and its speeds of 8 pages per minute for black and 5 pages per minute for color are certainly not impressive. Nevertheless, affordable Deskjet 845 printer ink and a very low purchase price could definitely make it worth a look for buyers who want the basics.

Rather than a 1200x1200 dpi resolution, the 845 sports a resolution of 600x1200 dpi. While this won't make a major difference in image quality, it is worth noting that photos will especially benefit from the higher resolutions of some newer models. The unit connects via USB, with no option for wired or wireless network sharing, but it does support both Windows and Mac computers.

The boxy design of the 845 is fairly standard for its class, though its dimensions of 7x18x14 inches might be a little larger than some buyers would expect. Its weight of 12.5 pounds, even with HP 845 ink installed, is great for home use. The input paper tray holds 100 sheets of plain paper, or up to 15 envelopes. Both the input and output paper tray are oriented toward the front, however, which can lead to more frequent paper jams, especially with thick media.

Even though HP 845 ink cartridges have pretty high yields for an inkjet, at 410 pages for color and 500 pages for black, the OEM prices generally run pretty high. As an alternative, users can find remanufactured Deskjet 845 ink cartridges for a fraction of the price, reducing the cost per page significantly.

The 845 isn't overly impressive in any of the areas of speed, output quality, or features, but it will provide basic document and photo printing for bargain-hunting buyers who aren't too picky. Seeking alternatives to costly OEM HP 845 printer ink will be essential, however.
