HP 6122 Printer Review

The HP Deskjet 6122 is intended to be used as a personal printer, though it does produce high-quality text that is fit for a professional environment. However, in an office, the overall capacity and speed of production will most likely be insufficient, making it more ideal for the home. The 6122 supports an array of media types and has an expandable paper capacity. USB and parallel ports are built in, but the option of adding networking capabilities is also available if needed.

In Best mode, which will create the highest resolution, black-and-white documents are produced at a rate of 1.4 pages per minute and color at 0.3 pages per minute. In Draft mode, which uses less HP 6122 printer ink per print, up to 20 black-and-white pages and 13 color pages can be completed in a minute. For printing 4x6-inch pictures, only about 1.7 can be generated per minute in Draft mode and 0.7 photos in Best mode.

Upon purchase, the box includes the inkjet printer unit with the necessary paper trays, power supply cables, and HP 6122 ink cartridges. Setup and reference manuals for both Windows and Mac users are also included, as well as printer driver CDs for both operating systems. An additional paper tray is sold separately, which will increase the paper capacity from 150 sheets to 400 sheets. An automatic duplexer can be used to print on both sides of the paper and a sensor is in place to recognize which media type is being used.

With the vivid colors created by the Deskjet 6122 ink and HP PhotoREt II enhancement technology, photos will have a maximum resolution of 4800x1200 dpi and be true to the original. Standard text documents have a resolution of 600x600 dpi, which is average for inkjet printers.

Though the monthly duty cycle of this device is 5,000 prints, the Deskjet 6122 ink cartridges produce significantly fewer pages, at 450 for the tricolor supply and 850 for the black printer ink. Replacements are readily available online from various vendors, many of which offer compatible HP 6122 ink that costs less than half as much as the OEM versions.

The 6122 is designed to focus more on quality than speed and functionality. It is an excellent personal printer and comes with all the accessories needed to start printing.
