HP 450 Printer Review

With a 500-page monthly print limit, the HP Deskjet 450 is clearly not a machine intended to be used in big offices with heavy daily volumes. Rather, this 13.3x7.4x3.3-inch inkjet printer is classified as a mobile printer, which traveling business people can use on the road to occasionally print important documents. The 450 weighs less than 5 pounds, even when both HP 450 ink cartridges and the battery are installed, making it a light travel partner.

Durable and compact, this unit is purposely designed to handle life on the road. For example, it supports a number of wired (parallel and USB) and wireless (infrared and Bluetooth) connections, though the Bluetooth card is sold separately. The 450 makes it quick and easy to not only print from a computer, but also print from handheld devices like tablets and cell phones, as well as from digital cameras. The main input tray holds 45 sheets of standard paper and a special slot is available for alternative media, such as labels and transparencies. Both Windows and Mac platforms are supported.

There are two other optional features besides the Bluetooth card. First, a lithium battery can be installed so the 450 doesn't have to be plugged into the wall during use. This battery generally lasts for about 350 printed pages. Which Deskjet 450 ink cartridges are used is also an option. Initially, the machine comes with black and tricolor printer ink, but an optional photo color supply is also available. If users opt to go with the photo color option, it holds black, light magenta, and light cyan HP 450 ink, and replaces the black supply.

Speed is not this inkjet printer's most impressive characteristic. In Draft mode, which uses the least amount of Deskjet 450 ink per inch, the top speed is between 8-9 pages per minute. In Best mode, which renders the top quality resolution of 4800x1200 dpi by maximizing the amount of HP 450 ink used per inch, the output rate slows to less than 2 pages per minute.

Overall, the HP Deskjet 450 is an ideal printer for travel. It is easy to move and takes up very little space, but still offers a 6-color printer ink system to create professional output quality. Users who want fast speeds, however, may need to keep looking.
