The Dell 948 is a multipurpose inkjet device that functions primarily as a photo printer with the addition of a copier, basic scanner, and fax function. This all-in-one unit has an affordable price tag, but suffers from somewhat slow print speed, with color projects printing at slower speeds than the rated 25 pages per minute and monochrome documents rated for 28 pages per minute. Images, however, fared much better in expert speed tests, making this a decent photo printer that benefits from a host of other features.

The device is surprisingly compact with a size of only 11x18x16 inches that tucks Dell 948 printer ink securely out of the way underneath the front panel. With only 32 MB of memory and a maximum monthly duty cycle of 1,000 pages, the unit is best suited for low-volume users. In addition, it has minimal media handling that includes a total input capacity of 100 pages and a 25-sheet automatic document feeder for continuous scanning and faxing.

The unit's standard connectivity includes a high-speed USB port, as well as plenty of support for flash memory cards like MultiMediaCard, CompactFlash and Memory Stick Pro formats that allows for direct photo printing. Users can scan documents directly to email, and with its built-in optical character recognition software, paper documents can easily be converted into editable text files.

With its combined 110-sheet capacity tricolor Dell 948 ink cartridge, users will need to replace supplies relatively frequently. The device uses an additional 420-sheet black Dell 948 printer ink cartridge that can create text documents with a resolution of 4800x1200 dpi. An additional high-capacity 472-sheet black supply is available for purchase.

The unit suffers from slow speeds, but benefits from a number of elements including an impressive all-in-one design, small size and satisfactory photo printing function. For an inkjet printer that excels at image output and has the capacity to also scan, copy and fax projects, the 948 is a nice choice.
