Ideally suited as a personal printer, the Dell 1230cn is a basic laser model that is affordable and reliable, but is not equipped to handle heavy volumes. Though it does have a monthly duty cycle of 20,000 prints, the machine may not be durable enough for continuous use. It does offer color printing, though only about 4 pages per minute can be printed at the highest quality level. Documents can be printed at a rate of up to 17 pages per minute at the fastest settings.

This machine is often referred to simply as the 1230, however, the alternative model to the 1230cn is actually the 1230c, which does not offer networking. The standard connection that is on both model variations is a USB port. Both Windows and Mac OS X are supported by this color laser printer, so using it in a cross-platform office setting should not be a problem.

Four Dell 1230cn toner cartridges are used, which hold cyan, magenta, yellow and black printer toner. These four toners create a deep internal color depth and ultimately provide a resolution of 2400x600 dpi, which will create professional-quality text documents. Some reviews indicate that complex graphics and images are often a bit grainy, though. The black Dell 1230cn toner can yield as many as 1,500 pages before expiring while the color printer toner can only yield about 1,000 prints each.

The input paper capacity is 150 sheets of regular paper and the output capacity is 100 sheets. However, various paper types are supported, increasing the variety of tasks that can be completed with the 1230. Photo paper, transparencies, labels, envelopes, cards and glossy paper are all supported media types.

Even with four Dell 1230 toner cartridges installed, this unit only weights about 24 pounds, making it simple to move around the home or office. It has a compact frame as well, measuring 15.3x12.3x9.6 inches and fitting comfortably on a standard desk or table.

Though it may lack some of the modern features found on office printers and it cannot perform multiple functions, this unit is a reliable and solid machine. The affordable Dell 1230 printer toner keeps lifetime maintenance costs low, making it a great all-around value.
