The Canon PIXMA MP990 is designed primarily as a home photo printer, but also incorporates a versatile multipurpose design that offers scanning and copying functionality. The inkjet printer has a maximum speed of 12 pages per minute for monochrome documents and 9 pages per minute for color output that are on the slower end of its class. For its price and the low cost of replacement Canon MP990 printer ink, the MP990 isn't a bad deal for buyers that want an all-in-one printer capable of delivering lab-quality photos at home.

The device is lacking in a few areas, including its omission of an automatic document feeder for quick duplicating and scanning. Faxing is also missing, but this won't likely be an issue for most buyers. The total media capacity of 150 pages is limited, but should be adequate for the volumes of moderate home use. The input tray supports a number of photo paper sizes such as 5x7-inch, 8x10-inch and even 4x6-inch borderless media. Additional elements that cater to photo printing include memory card slots that are compatible with a range of flash memory like MicroSD and Memory Stick Duo.

The control panel includes a 3.8-inch LCD display and features like automatic photo fix, manual color adjustments and an indication of the PIXMA MP990 printer ink levels. The front panel also has access to scan features like network scanning and scan-to-memory. The unit also has the capacity to connect to a Wi-Fi network for wireless use.

The device uses the Canon ChromaLife 100+ PIXMA MP990 ink system that incorporates individual cyan, magenta, yellow black and pigment black, as well as an 80-sheet capacity gray supply. The pigment black can yield up to 350 pages and the standard black has a capacity of 420 pages. Text printed with the black Canon MP990 ink cartridge can print at sharp resolutions of 600x600 dpi. Each color Canon MP990 ink cartridge can last up to 420 pages and are capable of printing photos and graphics with a maximum resolution of 9600x2400 dpi.

The MP990 is proficient at providing personal photos and other occasional projects like copies or scans. The inkjet printer's output, wireless connectivity and direct photo printing support make it a nice addition to homes.
