The Canon PIXMA iP4000 and iP4000R are photo-centric inkjet printers that can print lab-quality images and graphics for an inexpensive price. Experts praise the base model for its quick speeds, printing regular text projects at a rate of 25 pages per minute, color documents in as fast as 17 pages per minute and 4x6-inch borderless photos in approximately 36 seconds. With its solid speeds, high-quality output and a good range of features, the iP4000 offers a strong balance of performance and user-friendly software for home users.

The device comes with an assortment of applications to enhance photo printing, including PhotoRecord that will allow users to customize their photo albums, and Easy-PhotoPrint for quick red-eye correction and editing. While it lacks an LCD for previewing photos, the front panel is easy to navigate and incorporates LEDs that will keep users updated on paper and PIXMA iP4000 printer ink levels.

The iP4000 has versatile connectivity that ranges from standard USB and parallel ports for PC connectivity to a PictBridge compatible port for direct photo printing from supported cameras. The printer also has versatile media handling, supporting media like photo paper, photo stickers, glossy paper and iron-on transfers. With a total media capacity of 300 pages, it can easily support light to medium volume homes.

One issue with the unit is its slightly below part text printing, but resolutions of 600x600 dpi using black Canon iP4000 printer ink are decent enough to support occasional monochrome projects. Photos on the other hand stood well against test, printing, with fine detail and a maximum resolution of 4800x1200 dpi using color PIXMA iP4000 ink.

To maintain lower running costs, users can replace the black, cyan, magenta and yellow Canon iP4000 ink cartridges with remanufactured supplies over more expensive OEM versions. Each color and black standard capacity supply can yield up to 420 pages. An available high-capacity black Canon iP4000 ink cartridge can print up to 750 pages.

Other than its omission of an LCD, this inkjet printer has the features and applications home users will need to print their own photos. From its quick speeds to its ample media handling and flexible connectivity, the iP4000 is one of the better models in its class.
