Canon L4000 Printer Review

The Canon L4000 is a fax machine and monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. It is a capable fax machine, but its slow transmission speeds and page memory are behind the competition.

Despite the popularity of all-in-one machines, there are many good reasons to have a dedicated fax machine. For users who receive a lot of faxes, it is often better to dedicate a fax machine to receiving faxes and keep the printer or copier free for other tasks. Also, leaving the fax machine on at all times means you can turn off a printer or copier when not in use.

As a fax machine, the Canon L4000 is quite good. It has most of the features one would expect. The machine has a one-hour battery backup built in, to ensure users won't miss faxes in the event of a power outage. It can also store up to 42 pages in memory in the event that it runs out of paper. Unfortunately, many competing models offer larger page memory, and the Canon L4000's transmission speeds are also disappointing, at only 14.4 kbps.

The Canon L4000 toner cartridges are easily accessed and replaced. Each Canon L4000 toner cartridge has a capacity of 2,700 pages, so users will not have to replace it often. The laser toner cartridges are quite affordably-priced, resulting in a low cost per page, which can be reduced even more by using third-party compatible printer cartridges.

As a printer, the Canon L4000 is adequate, but not overly impressive. Print speed is slow, as it is designed for slow fax receiving speeds. Text quality is good, but graphics are below average. Canon L50 toner tends to outshine this model for graphics. The Canon L4000 might be useful for an occasional print job, but it definitely won't replace a dedicated printer.
