The Canon imageRUNNER 2230 will appeal to big offices that need a heavy-duty machine that can perform a multitude of important daily tasks with consistent quality and speed. This powerful monochrome laser device includes a digital copier, network printer, and color scanner. With an output rate of 22 pages per minute and a monthly duty cycle of 80,000 prints, the 2230 should have no problem keeping pace with the busiest of offices.

When the 2230 is turned on, it will take about 15 seconds to warm up, while it takes only 10 seconds to warm-up from sleep mode. Copying tasks that are sent from the flatbed scan surface will begin printing in less than 5 seconds and tasks sent from the automatic document feeder take about 7 seconds for the first page to begin printing. Though this speed is not among the fastest on the market, it should be efficient enough for standard offices.

With the single Canon 2230 toner cartridge installed, this machine weighs a little over 150 pounds. The wheels make it easier to move, but the 22x28-inch footprint could take up quite a bit of space. There are two output trays to catch completed documents. The dual input trays hold 550 sheets each while the bypass tray, used for alternative media, can hold up to 50 sheets. Additional trays are available that will increase the input paper capacity to a maximum of 2,250 sheets.

Scans will have a resolution of 600x600 dpi, while copies can be made at a maximum of 1200x600 dpi. Prints, however, can reach a resolution of 2400x600 dpi, which is impressive considering only black Canon 2230 printer toner is used. An automatic duplexer is also on-board, allowing users to easily print on both sides of the paper.

An imageRUNNER 2230 toner cartridge will yield up to 21,000 pages, while the drum unit in the machine can yield up to 75,000 pages before needing to be replaced. Replacement OEM toners are a little on the expensive side, but many third-party vendors offer compatible Canon 2230 toner to reduce the operational costs. The non-name brand versions of the imageRUNNER 2230 toner will provide the same yield and quality as the OEM versions, at around half the price.

Having an expandable multipurpose device in a busy office is invaluable, as it is hard to predict spikes in the volume of daily demands. The Canon imageRUNNER 2230 may be a bit oversized for small offices, but offers the speed, quality, and versatility needed for larger work volumes.
