Canon MF6590 Printer Review

The Canon MF6590 is a multifunction monochrome laser printer designed for the home or small office user. It has ethernet networking built in, along with fast speeds and large paper capacity. The printer toner is also inexpensive, unlike similar Lexmark C5240CH toner.

For the home or small office user who needs a multifunction device they can share across a network of computers, the MF6590 will fit the bill nicely. It has a built-in ethernet port for easily connecting it to an existing network. It will then be easily accessible from any computer on the network. Setting up networking is also a breeze.

Many offices are in the process of converting old paper documents to digital archives, to save space or to make their archives more easily accessible. The MF6590 can help with this as well. It has OCR (optical character recognition) software included for converting scanned text into documents that are editable and searchable. Not only that, but the unit also includes an automatic document feeder which can scan either single-sided sheets or even two-sided sheets automatically, up to 50 sheets at a time. Color scanning is available, even though the printer is only monochrome. Scanning up to 24-bit color depth is possible, with an optical resolution of up to 600 dpi.

Paper handling is quite impressive for the price. The standard tray can hold up to 500 sheets, while the multipurpose tray can hold up to 100 sheets. This is more than the average multifunction device at this price point, and means that reloading paper will be an infrequent task. Print speed is quite fast at 24 pages per minute, like the Dell 3115cn that uses Dell 310-8094 toner. Print quality is exactly what one would expect from Canon. Sharp text and even decent graphics quality are both very impressive.

Toner capacity is also impressive, as the Canon MF6590 toner has a page yield of 5,000 pages. It is not an excessive amount of toner; but for a home or small office user, the Canon MF6590 toner cartridge is fully satisfactory. For even smaller needs, consider the Dell 1100 and its needed Dell 310-6640 toner.

Overall, the Canon MF6590 is a well-designed machine that hits all the major features and even adds a few extras. Scanning and OCR features are particularly appealing to those users archiving old documents, and large paper capacity will be appealing to the small office with multiple network users.
