The Canon i9900 photo printer is a medium-format printer for photography enthusiasts. Desk or shelf space is a consideration, since this printers' footprint is 23-by-13-inches. The Canon i9900 ink is ejected onto photo paper using advanced MicroFine droplet technology, much like wtih the HP 78 ink printer. The i9900s speed for a borderless 4" x 6" color photo is 1.3 minutes. An 8" x 10" is equally as fast.

Maximum print resolution from the Canon i9900 inkjet cartridges is 4800 x 1200 dpi for black and white and 4800 x 2400 dpi for color. This high resolution is achieved because the Canon i9900 ink cartridges print using eight ink tanks comprised of cyan, magenta, yellow, photo cyan, photo magenta, black, red, and green, proving images will be more true to life than the Brother LC61BK ink can achieve. One distinct feature of the i9900 is the larger media it can accept. That includes legal size, super B and ledger B sizes. It can also print on card stock and envelopes.

Connection is made using standard and high-speed USB and Firewire 400 port.Photo manipulation software includes PhotoRecord for creating printed albums and Easy PhotoPrint Plus for photo printing. Mac compatible with OS 8.6 to 9.x and OS X 10.2.1. Also Windows 97, ME and XP.

CNET found that "the combination of speedy performance, first-rate print quality, and a low consumables cost will more than compensate for the Canon i9900's otherwise average report card." Reviewers find fault with the included software and electronic users manuals which lack sufficient detail. The lack of media compatibility choices is also an often cited negative. The Canon i9900 inkjet photo printer offers a limited possibility for using third-party papers.

Owner-reviewers generally speak very well of the i9900. They like its speed and color print quality using i9900 toner, which is rated higher than Canon CL-211XL ink. As a matter of fact, even the nay-sayers praise the color print quality. The biggest complaints all seem to revolve around durability or service. The software short-comings cited by professional reviewers is not a theme repeated by actual owners.
