The Canon i900D is an entry-level inkjet printer that can suit the needs of frequent photo printing for home users. The device can print a 4x6-inch photo in as fast as 75 seconds, but it can take up to 3 minutes to print full 8.5x11-inch photos. For such a low price tag, it is impressive that the i900D has a moderately quick output and is able to print lab-quality images. Unfortunately, the machine does leave several key photo-centric features out, such as flexible direct printing options and control tools to edit photos.

As is the case with many home printers, the i900D has a small size of 17x11x7 inches that will enable to sit unobtrusively on a desktop adjacent to a user's computer. The unit's software package is compatible with Windows and Mac operating systems and can be installed quickly and easily. This includes software like Easy-PhotoPrint, PhotoStitch and PhotoRecord, which will allow users to create their own albums, edit and sharpen images. The device also comes with starter Canon i900D printer ink and has a built-in memory of 248 KB.

Rather than including popular Wi-Fi, FireWire or ePrint connectivity options for greater versatility, the i900D only comes with 2 front card reader slots and a rear USB port. However, since these are PictBridge-compliant slots users will be able to print straight from compatible memory cards like CompactFlash, SmartMedia and Memory Stick. Also included on its front panel is a small 2-inch LCD and menu pad that enables users to scroll through menus and track a job's progress.

The unit's single input tray has a maximum capacity of 150 pages for plain 8.5x11-inch paper and up to 20 pages for specialty photo media. Users will have the option to print an assortment of different media types, such as matte photo paper, glossy paper, high resolution paper and transparencies. The option to attach a 4x6-inch photo input tray will allow users to quickly switch between printing standard text projects and images.

The device uses individual black, cyan, magenta, yellow, photo cyan and photo magenta Canon i900D printer ink cartridges, which combine with its print head system to print images with a sharp maximum resolution of 4800x1200 dpi. Each color and black Canon i900D ink cartridge can last up to 420 pages, which makes the device suitable for low to medium volumes.

Experts note that while the i900D isn't the most advanced personal photo printer available, this inkjet device offers an impressive array of features considering its inexpensive price tag. From its PictBridge-compatible slots and decent output speeds to its sharp and consistent output quality, this machine is a good solution for home photo enthusiasts.
