Canon DS810 Printer Review
The Canon Selphy DS810 is an inkjet printer that was designed exclusively for photo printing. Users looking for a business printer, a Phaser 8560 with high-yielding Xerox 108R00725 ink would be a much better choice. Much like the DS700, the DS810 is portable and user friendly. However, it is not set up to connect and print directly from a television. The DS810 has a 2.5 color LCD on the top panel that allows users to preview images without a PC. It can print a borderless 4"x6" image in just over a minute - and is compatible with Mac and Windows.
There are 768 nozzles and only one tri-color Canon DS810 ink cartridge in this unit. More current models also have black tanks, such as HP 02 Black ink. The Selphy DS810 ink tank has cyan, magenta and yellow in it and the nozzles are used to extract printer ink and dispense it onto the photo paper. There is no black Selphy DS810 ink cartridge, but the 3 colors can blend together to make black and white photos. However, one of the issues with this device is that black and white photos can only be printed from a PC. It is estimated that it costs about 29 cents per copy using Canon DS810 ink.
The Canon DS810 is light and compact for easy mobility. It weighs only about 4 pounds, and it measures at 8.7"x3.9"x8.7". Unfortunately it has no battery, only an AC adapter which can cause problems when a consumer is on the move. There are 12 buttons for navigation on the top part of the DS810, and it can print on a few different sizes of paper - standard 4"x6" pictures, credit cards and photo stickers. It also has ink that gives users a lower cost per page than other kinds, such as Canon CL-41 ink.
This unit is available for approximately $150, and the replacement Canon DS810 ink is around $25. Critics say the frequent print head cleaning tends to waste a lot of printer ink, which gets expensive to constantly replace. They prefer the Epson Picture Mate or the HP Photosmart 385. With the DS810, Canon may not have met their usual standard that excels beyond the competition, but this inkjet unit is still a solid choice for personal color photo printing.
