It can perform all of these tasks in black-and-white or color. Often referred to as the MFC-9450cdn, which denotes its color capabilities, automatic duplexer, and built-in networking, this laser all-in-one device will benefit a work environment by conserving space and saving time.

The speed of the MFC-9450 is decent, though there other printers of this nature that operate considerably faster. Up to 21 black-and-white documents can be printed in a minute while color documents can print at 17 pages per minute. Copies are generated at a maximum rate of 17 pages per minute and the fax machine can receive a fax in less than 3 seconds, due to the 33.6 Kbps engine. Scans are processed at about the same rate as faxes.

Users have the option of purchasing standard or high-capacity replacement toners. The standard cyan, magenta, and yellow Brother MFC-9450 toner cartridges can yield up to 1,500 pages each and the standard black supply can render up to 2,500 pages. High-capacity color Brother MFC-9450 printer toner cartridges yield 4,000 pages and the black supply produces up to 5,000 prints before expiring. Compatible Brother MFC-9450 toner is also available from some third-party vendors for a reduced price.

A few different connection options are available for users to choose from. To connect to a single PC, a USB port is available, though a USB cable is not provided by the manufacturer. An ethernet interface is present for multiple users to share the MFC-9450 in an office environment. A front-mounted USB Direct port supports flash drives and its PictBridge support can be used to connect a digital camera directly to the printer, bypassing the computer.

Memory and paper capacity are both expandable, which is an important feature for a color laser printer being used in a growing office. The built-in memory is 68 MB, but this can be upgraded to 576 MB as needed. A 250-sheet main tray and 50-sheet multipurpose tray are standard, but an additional tray that holds 500 sheets can be added to increase the total capacity to 800 sheets.
