The Brother HL-2280 is moderately fast and can print text and graphic projects at a rate of up to 27 pages per minute. This monochrome laser has a multifunction design and basic set of features to fit small office needs, but nothing particularly unique to make it stand out. The manufacturer makes an additional HL-2280DW model, however, that has the ability to print wirelessly and print double-sided on paper.

The base model is configured with ports for USB and ethernet connectivity. A majority of its features are standard and highlight low-volume capabilities, including a maximum monthly duty cycle of 10,000 pages, 32 MB of RAM and an input capacity of 250 sheets. Its all-in-one features are also fairly basic. The scanner is capable of scanning to email or the PC, and the copier can create a maximum of 99 duplicates from an original document. Due to a simple set features and straight forward design, the device has a decently compact size of only 16x15x10 inches.

The machine is capable of producing monochrome projects with a maximum resolution of 2400x600 dpi using Brother HL-2280 printer toner. Reviews point to an occasional grainy quality for graphics and images, but this is sometimes the case with low-volume monochrome devices. Text documents provide better results, with sharp lines and dense black edges.

There is a provided 700-page starter black Brother HL-2280 toner cartridge. Supplies are easy to replace, snapping in and out of the machine located directly underneath the front panel. When it comes time to replace the starter supply, users can purchase either a 1,200-page standard supply or a high-capacity 2,600-sheet Brother HL-2280 toner cartridge.

This run-of-the-mill monochrome unit is intended for small or home offices with low volumes. It has an affordable retail price and high-capacity toners, but those that want more bang for their buck should consider other devices with a more impressive list of features.
