Brother HL-1650 Printer Review

The Brother HL-1650 laser printer is designed for the home or small office user. Combining good print quality, great functionality, and an affordable price, it is a great choice for users on a budget. It even has some expandability for the future. It doesn't offer color printing, though.

The design of the Brother HL-1650 is pretty straightforward. It is a typical beige box printer, but its functional design makes it very easy to use and get back to work. The control panel is more detailed than some less expensive models. It features a three-color LCD screen for status updates and the menu, and it has four buttons for controlling the menu. Many printers in this price range do not have an LCD screen, and instead rely on the software to handle settings, so this is a very convenient feature.

Paper capacity is quite impressive for the price, with 250 sheets in the main drawer and 100 sheets in the multipurpose tray. There is also a single-sheet straight path for heavy media that can't be bent. USB 2.0 and parallel connections are included, and there is an optional upgrade for adding ethernet networking support, though users may find that an external print server is less expensive. The unit with networking included is known as the HL-1650N.

Brother HL-1650 toner cartridges have a capacity of 3,300 pages, but high-yield laser toner cartridges have a capacity of 6,500 pages. Either printer toner cartridge is affordably-priced, but the high-yield cartridge results in a lower cost per page.

Print speed is fast, at around 16 pages per minute. Print quality is excellent, with dark and sharp text and average graphics and photo quality. Users who need to do graphics often may find it limited.
