With so many devices taking on the same cube shape, it is nice to see some companies thinking a little differently. The Brother DCP-165C multifunction color inkjet printer is a great example of what can happen when its designers think outside the box. Its design isn't the only highlight, however, as it can reach speeds of up to 30 pages per minute, and it keeps printer ink costs low with affordable Brother DCP-165C ink.

Whereas many units with similar features take up more vertical space, the DCP-165C features a flatter design that is only 5.9 inches tall, saving a lot of space. This does come at the cost of a slightly larger footprint, at 15.4 by 14.4 inches, but for users who want to fit it under a shelf, for example, it could be the perfect form factor, and well worth this tradeoff.

With such a small design, its 100-sheet paper capacity is actually pretty impressive, and should be a good amount for the average home user, without needing frequent paper reloads. It doesn't have a bypass feed, however, which means the main tray must be emptied when printing on envelopes, transparencies, or other non-standard media types. The front of the inkjet can accept many standard memory card types for direct printing, and a USB port is available for connecting flash drives or other storage media.

When printer ink is expensive, it can dwarf the price of an otherwise affordable device, but luckily, Brother DCP-165C ink cartridges are quite reasonable. Having to replace four separate Brother DCP-165C ink cartridges would be unbearable if it weren't for the affordable prices available online. Even more savings can be had by choosing compatible Brother DCP-165C ink instead of OEM, as well.

What sets the Brother DCP-165C apart from the competition is mainly its innovative design which will target the space-challenged buyer. Apart from this, however, it also provides great color output and fast speeds that give it a broader appeal.
