Lately we've been hearing about a lot of projects on GoFundMe, Indiegogo and Kickstarter that seem unreal. Here are our favorites.
Thongs Earned $10,000 in an Hour
I know what you're thinking. But these thongs are actually flipflops. The founders of Willi Footwear developed a special boomerang plug to keep sandals from blowing out. They turned to crowdfunding website Indiegogo to raise the money for the production run, product molds, patent fees, shipping and logistics, and the public didn't let them down. Within an hour they had $10k, and within 24 hours they reached 45% of their $30k goal. They're currently halfway with 29 days left. Ready to order a pair?
This $50k Salad Must Be Made with Yukon Gold Potatoes
We think we know what to expect when someone uses "Danger" in their name. But Zack Danger Brown is doing something completely innocent online: raising money for potato salad. What started as a simple joke - a Kickstarter project with a $10 goal and rewards like "I will say your name out loud while making the potato salad" - captured the public's imagination. With a week remaining, Zach has raised over $52,000. For a simple donation and the price of a plane ticket to Columbus, Ohio, you can join the party.
Lionel Richie Is Truly Larger than Life
All you hardcore Richie fans already know about this Kickstarter project. Last year a Spanish art group raised £8,016 (over $13,000) to create a giant inflatable sculpture of Lionel Richie's head for a music festival. They easily surpassed their £4,900 goal with only 211 backers. If you couldn't make it to the festival, you could receive a Lionel Richie t-shirt.
Hopefully you feel inspired to fund your own zany idea. In the meantime, keep searching crowdfunding sites for innovative and silly projects. Who knows? You may score a Grilled Cheesus machine.
