  7. Install the New Drum - Installing the new drum is easy. Simply line up the arrows on the drum with the arrows on the printer. Lower the imaging drum carefully into the machine. Press it firmly into place. You'll know it's properly installed because you won't be able to shake it loose.

The most common issues with HP Photosmart scanners involve the software, operating system and mechanical parts.

Symptoms of software issues include inability to open the program, incompatibility errors and program crashes. Most of these problems are caused by installation errors or outdated software. If you think your scanner is experiencing problems with its software, you can follow the steps below.

  1. Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet and check for updates to your scanner's model.
  2. Download the appropriate updates and install them to your computer.
  3. If there are no updates, you may need to completely reinstall the software.
  4. Go to control panel and find the add/remove icon. Locate your scanner's software and click the uninstall button.

HP LaserJet P2010 PrinterThe control panel of the HP LaserJet P2010 features six lights from top to bottom with a button beneath them all. The six lights and the button, from top to bottom, are:

  • Light 1: The Jam light. Looks likes two circles with a Z.
  • Light 2: The toner light. Looks like six black balls inside a box.
  • Light 3: The Paper Out light. Looks like a page of paper.
  • Light 4: The Attention light. A triangle with an exclamation point inside it.
  • Light 5: The Ready light. Looks like a circle with a small gap in it.
  • Light 6: The Go button. A large circle with a diamond inside it.
  • Button: The Cancel button.

Here are the various light statuses that involve different combinations of lights illuminating or flashing:

Go, Ready, and Attention lights (lights 4-6) all flash one after another
Message and Solution: The printer is starting up and initializing. This sequence will also occur when the user requests a reconfiguration of the printer through one of its special initialization procedures. Additionally, these lights will cycle if the printer is processing a job cancel request. Upon job cancel, the printer lights will return to a Ready configuration.

Ready light (light 5) on
Message and Solution: Printer is ready for use with no job activity.

Ready light (light 5) flashing
Message and Solution: Printer is currently handling the receipt of data or a job request. While the Ready light is flashing, pressing the Cancel button will cancel the job request.

Go button (light 6) illuminated and Attention light (light 4) flashing
Message and Solution: The printer is experiencing a manual feed error. This type of error could have to do with a memory configuration problem.  To print anyway, press the Go button. The printer will either successfully print the job request or go back to the error state.

Attention light (light 4) flashing
Message and Solution: This means that the print-cartridge door is open. To stop the Attention light from flashing, close the door.

Attention, Ready, and Go lights (lights 4-6) illuminated
Message and Solution: Fatal error. Turn your printer off and on with a 10-second delay. If you cannot resolve this issue, contact HP support.

Attention, Ready, and Go lights (lights 4-6) flashing together
Message and Solution: Accessory error. Press the Go button to access additional information about the error.

Toner light (lights 2) illuminated
Message and Solution: Toner Low. It does not matter if the Go, Ready, or Attention lights are on or off. To resolve this error, order and install a new HP toner cartridge.

Toner light (light 2) flashing
Message and Solution: Toner Missing. Insert the toner back into the printer. If the toner is already inside the printer, take it out and put it back in again. If the error is still showing, contact HP support.

Jam light (light 1) flashing
Message and Solution: Paper Jam. Check to make sure the loading tray is not full or loaded incorrectly. Remove any paper or paper particles that may be jammed around the printer's cartridge area, output bin, input tray, or the straight-through output path.

Paper Out light (light 3) flashing
Message and Solution: Paper Out. There is no paper in the input tray. Add more paper or other stationery for printing.

Paper Out light (light 3) flashing and Go light (light 6) illuminated
Message and Solution: Paper Mount. The type of paper or stationery in the input tray is not supported and the printer cannot print on it. You can override this warning by pressing the Go button or check to make sure you have loaded an accepted type of paper or media.

Why you should perform a HP fax test

HPIf you have recently set up an HP fax machine, you should make sure to perform a fax test. This should be done to make sure the fax machine is actually operating properly and has the ability to send and receive faxes. If you do not perform a fax test, your fax machine may fail to operate when you do need it to communicate with clients or business partners.

In the past, testing a fax machine was a very elaborate, time consuming, and frustrating process. Thankfully, manufacturers have since introduced ways to test fax machines quickly and efficiently using fax test programs.  Running the test is relatively easy and completing the test should only take about ten minutes. Once it’s finished, a person can rest assured that their fax machine will work properly when needed.

  1. Make sure the machine has power.
  2. Make sure paper is in the paper tray.
  3. Switch the machine on.
  4. For the this step, a fax cover sheet must be filled out. This should include writing both the sender’s name as well as the fax number of the fax machine into the open spaces for this information on the cover sheet’s sender column.  In the recipient area, you should write “HP fax test.” This will let the recipient know you are sending a fax test. The fax will be sent to a certain number that Hewlett-Packard set aside to allow new fax machine owners to test their machines. The number the fax should be sent to is 1-888-473-2963.  There will be a space that asks for this number on the cover sheet.  There will also be another space that asks for the number of pages, write “2” in this space.
  5. Once you have finished the cover sheet, you need to place it inside your machine. Whether it should be placed face down or face up depends on the model of your HP fax machine. If you’re not sure, look over the instructions or manual that came with the machine. Along with the cover letter, include one blank piece of paper.
  6. Now, you send the fax. To send the fax, type in the HP fax test number and press the send button. The send button will sometimes be labeled “Start” depending on your model.
  7. You now have to wait for a fax back from the HP fax test number. This process will not be instantaneous. However, it should only take between five to eight minutes to get a response. When the fax test number is reached by your fax, HP will produce a return fax to let you know that your fax machine is operating properly. 

If you do not receive a return fax after 12 minutes, you should attempt to send a second fax. If the second fax does not work, you will need to troubleshoot what is causing your connection problems which is typically the telephone line.  If you have connected the fax machine to a voice over IP line (VOIP), this may be the cause.  Fax machines typically do not work well over VOIP lines.

"Install black cartridges" error on HP LaserJet M1522nf

It can be very frustrating to receive an error message from a machine that seems to contradict reality. Being confronted with the "Install Black Cartridge" error message on the HP LaserJet M1522nf has created lots of frustration for many operators.  Fortunately, other HP models like the HP 1320 toner printer don’t experience this issue due to a better design.  Here are some easy tips to address this problem and prevent one's stress levels from reaching the boiling point.

HP LaserJet M1522nfError messages are meant to signal an operator as to the current status of a printer. However, there are some possible problems with every machine that are too rare to warrant the accumulation of an additional error message. When this happens, the manufacturer has usually associated that particular error with an existing error message. Unfortunately, this association of rarer disrupted operational statuses can be confusing to an operator. This is the kind of situation an operator can find themselves in when confronted with the "Install Black Cartridge" error message on the HP LaserJet M1522nf. Avoid frustration and remain calm by simply following these steps.

First, check to see that a toner cartridge is in fact installed. If the black toner cartridge has been removed and the access panel closed then the machine will appear to be in working order despite it being nonoperational. Open the access panel to check that the HP toner cartridge is actually there. If so, close the access panel and turn off the machine for 10 seconds and turn it back on. The machine will cycle through its start up procedures, but if the error message returns continue to the next tip.

Open the toner access panel and remove the cartridge. Check to see if it is indicating that it is empty. If so, replace the toner cartridge and wait for the error message to clear as the machine prepares the new cartridge for printing. If the cartridge was recently replaced and the error message persists, then remove the toner cartridge and verify that it is properly installed by reinstalling it to its fully seated position.

Finally, if the error persists, the HP LaserJet M1522nf has a 250 sheet maximum capacity for its supply tray. While the calculation of this page count has been fully counted by the manufacturer, few operators take the time to count the specific number of pages that are loaded into the supply tray. If one has exceeded the 250 sheet capacity of 16lb paper, or a lesser capacity of thicker paper, then the supply paper can actually be the cause of this error because it is lifting up the laser toner cartridge. Remove the paper and any paper jams, re-seat the toner cartridge, reload less paper and the error should clear.
